3-7 seconds

That’s the average amount of time people spend looking at a work of art in a museum. Not nearly enough to capture the meaning of the artwork, to understand the artist’s intention or to even appreciate the artistry or see all the details that form the piece.

The interesting aspect of this stat is that these are people whose intent is to go see artwork. In fact they’ve paid to do so. This audience has purposely invested their time and money to go see these works of art and yet they spend so little time doing so.

One of the problems is that museums often place so many works of art together that they end up competing against each other. You may be walking down a gallery with 75 plus paintings and feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to focus your attention.

3-7 seconds is also the average amount of time that people spend looking at an ad or a website. And even worse than a gallery on a museum you have thousands of other ads and websites competing with for their attention.

Can you tell your story in 3-7 seconds? Can you stand out from all the rest?

You can place your ad on places where you know interested people you’ll be at. You can use messages that are relevant to your audience. You can be original and unique in order to stand out from your competition.  These are all useful, but what you really need to do is create an experience, a connection, engage with your audience.

Don’t forget you’re talking to human beings. They are lawyers, bankers, farmers, teachers, etc., but hey are also people. Talk and engage with them, as people. That is what will form a connection and truly make you stand out.
