what we think, we become.

the other day, I watched the movie The Iron Lady. there is a quote that Margaret Thatcher says in the movie that I thought was brilliant and very true not just for people but for organizations as well.

I’ve seen a variation of the quote by Ghandi, but this is how she said it in the movie;

watch your thoughts, for they become words.

watch your words, for they become actions.

watch your actions, for they become habits.

watch your habits, for they become your character.

watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

what we think, we become.

as an organization, the thoughts we have do become our words. they frame the conversations we have around board meetings and leadership meetings and influence our decisions and our actions. they define our focus and our actions, which develop into habits. these habits become ingrained in the organization and shape its character. an organization’s character is its brand and what your brand stands for or is known for will become your destiny.

this is why developing your brand and living it is so important for an organization. you cannot achieve your dreams, your business goals, without careful attention in defining who you want to be as an organization and ensuring you do by watching your thoughts, your words, your actions, your habits and your character.
